Format of Candidate Forums

League of Women Voters Minnesota participation policy states all forums will be held as scheduled, even if one of the candidates is unable or unwilling to attend. Deb Price, LWVWPA President, explained, “Our policy addresses voters’ concerns about our past practice of canceling forums when an opponent in a two-candidate race is unable or unwilling to be present. Now, if one candidate does not appear, the candidate in attendance will have an opportunity to express their positions on issues in their opening and closing statements and in response to questions submitted by the audience.”

Deb Price further explained, “It is unfair to voters for any one candidate or party to deprive voters of the opportunity to hear first-hand from candidates by attempting to manipulate League of Women Voters events by not appearing or not responding. We make every effort to choose dates that are agreeable to candidates and not in conflict with other public meetings or events. In today’s political environment, the League is choosing not to be held hostage by any candidate who would prefer not to answer voter questions and to see our events canceled. We feel this policy respects the time and interests of voters and candidates in attendance, and we will conduct the forum in a manner that is neutral to the absent candidate. Candidates have been notified of this policy in their invitation to the forum.”

During the forum, candidates will deliver a 2-minute opening statement. Each candidate will have 1 minute to answer the questions posed by the moderator.

The League of Women Voters Wayzata Plymouth Area does not endorse candidates for office or political parties. It is a 99-year old 501(c)3 political organization that encourages informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Membership is open to all. Membership information will also be available at the Candidate Forums.
