Wayzata Fire Chief donate homemade masks to FolkeStone.
Folkestone Campus Administrator, Beth Fries and Environmental Services Dr, Larry Johnson; and Wayzata Fire Chief, Kevin Klapprich.

Fire Department donates masks

A special thank you to the people who donated more than 300 homemade masks during a statewide mask drive. On Sat, April 25, community members dropped off homemade masks at the Wayzata Fire Station. The Wayzata Fire Department gave the masks to Folkestone Presbyterian Homes & Services. Beth Fries, Folkestone Campus Administrator will clean and sanitize the masks before giving them to more than 200 independent living residents who are at high risk.

The donations were a result of a statewide homemade mask drive launched by Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. On April 25, Minnesotans delivered homemade masks to their local fire department. More than 100,000 homemade masks were collected from fire departments throughout the state.

Panoway Construction Update

As we move into the month of May, crews continue making significant progress on the Lake Street construction related to phase one of Panoway on Wayzata Bay.

On May 6, the Lake Street road closure will extend to Manitoba Ave. While Lake Street will be closed to vehicles between Broadway Ave and  Manitoba Ave, pedestrians can still use  the sidewalks on the north side of the road.
Parking is available in the municipal parking lots off of Broadway and Walker avenues. Please follow the posted detour signs and refer to the detour map below.

Many of you have been coming downtown to enjoy the nice weather, walk along the shoreline, and get takeout from our wonderful restaurants. In addition to following social distancing guidelines, please follow posted detour signs, stay clear of the job site and avoid walking along the railroad. These measures will keep everyone safe.

Please visit www.NavigateWayzata.com for the latest construction updates.

RR Tracks

Police warn, stay off the tracks

As air temperatures climb and people venture outside to enjoy spring, walking along the BNSF Railway tracks to get to a destination may seem like a good idea; but it’s not. People who walk near the train tracks, on the tracks or in the gauge (area between the rails) are trespassing, an offense that is punishable by state and federal law.

“With the warm weather and with Lake Street under construction, it is not uncommon for officers to see people walking on the tracks or just hanging out on the tracks,” said Wayzata Police Chief, Mike Risvold. “The railroad track between Broadway Ave and Barry Ave is a hot spot for trespassers. People don’t realize their decision to walk on the tracks could be deadly and it doesn’t have to be that way.” The City of Wayzata engineers have a designated pedestrian and bike detour route that doesn’t require crossing the railroad tracks. The map can be found on navigatewayzata.com or on the city’s website, Wayzata.org.

The Wayzata Police Department is working with officials from BNSF Railway to ensure people are staying off railway tracks and only crossing where it's safe and legal to do so. The police department is sending a message to the community, respect the track, stay off the tracks.

City Hall Closed

City offices remain closed

Based on the recent order from the governor and current expectations for social distancing, city hall, the department of motor vehicle and the public works building are closed until further notice.

Many City services can be accessed digitally via our new Virtual City Hall.

Virtual City Hall makes it easier for residents, businesses, and visitors to find information, access services, and connect with City staff during a time when many of our operations have had to shift. To learn how you can conduct your City business from the comfort of your own home, visit www.wayzata.org/virtualcityhall.

Virtual Public Meetings

Virtual Public Meetings

Pursuant to Minnesota Statute 13D.015 and until further notice, the Wayzata City Council, Planning Commission, and Housing and Redevelopment Authority meetings will be held by electronic means using the cloud-based audio and video conferencing platform Zoom. Though the meetings will be conducted remotely, you can still watch and provide public comments. Visit www.wayzata.org/virtualpublicmeetings for instructions.

Community Development

  • The review schedule for several Development Applications has been affected by COVID-19. To track the anticipated review schedule for a particular project, please visit the Proposed Development Projects page of the City website.
  • The Boatworks Redevelopment Application at 294 Grove LN E will be reviewed by the City Council at the meeting on May 5. This meeting will very likely be hosted virtually using the video conferencing platform Zoom. As with all public hearings, the public is encouraged to send their comments to PublicComment@wayzata.org prior to the meeting to minimize issues with the call-in technology during the virtual meeting.
  • The May 4 Planning Commission meeting will be held virtually. Members of the public who wish to provide comments on any agenda items can find instructions at: www.wayzata.org/virtualpublicmeetings. More information about canceled meetings can be found at www.wayzata.org/coronavirus.
  • The City of Wayzata recognizes that small businesses are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several state and federal programs have been established to assist. The best place to begin researching options is using this Summary Guide from MN DEED: MN Department of Employment and Economic Development. Their webpage summarizes opportunities for small business and how to find the right fit for your business. Another great resources is the Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce website. In the last week, Hennepin County approved roughly $2 million to establish the Hennepin County Small Business Relief (HC SBR) Fund. More information is available here: https://www.hennepin.us/economic-development/programs/Emergency-relief.

Fire

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation International Firefighters Day

Shine your light for firefighters, May 4-5

For the first time, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation invites communities to celebrate firefighters by lighting their homes in red on May 4 – 5, 2020. They ask that you change your porch light(s) and share your story on social media, including #ShineYourLight4Firefighters, as a way to thank all of the firefighters who keep you safe.

Public Works

2020 Construction Projects

Sanitary Sewer Lining

The City of Wayzata is planning to perform maintenance on several sewer mains throughout the City. The maintenance includes the lining of the existing sewer main with a Cured-In-Place Pipe liner. Sewer relining is a quick and economical process in lieu of replacing pipes by open excavation. This process prevents major traffic disruptions and health hazards from potential exposure to raw sewage. The 2020 project proposes to line approximately 8,800 feet of sewer main in the following areas: Harmony Circle, Rosswood Lane, Ridgeview Dr, Ridgeview Ln, Margaret Circle, Shadyway Rd, Barry Ave N, and Gardner St (east of Barry Ave).
