 Wayzata Fallen Police Officer Memorial
National Police Week is Sun, May 10 - Sat, May 16. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day of significance for the Wayzata Police Department and for the community, as we pause to pay tribute to two of our fallen: Sergeant James William Anderson, End of Watch 08/31/1982 Officer William Allen Mathews, End of Watch 09/08/2017 Two wreaths have been placed by the Wayzata Police Memorial, located next to City Hall, in honor of the service and sacrifice of Sergeant Anderson and Officer Mathews. Wayzata Officers will join officers from around the state, by wearing black mourning bands on their badges for National Police Officers Memorial Day on Friday, May 15. The Wayzata Police Department invites you to watch as The Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association (LEMA) pays tribute to Minnesota’s fallen officers via their virtual memorial. The program will air on the LEMA Facebook page at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 90 minutes. The memorial can be found at www.facebook.com/MinnesotaLawEnforcementMemorialAssociationlema

LaDonna Hoy Day, Fri., May 15, 2020
During the May 19, City Council meeting, the Wayzata City Council will proclaim May 15, 2020, as LaDonna Hoy Day in the City of Wayzata.
Four decades ago, in the basement of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Hoy founded the Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners (IOCP). The organization is a human service nonprofit that delivers support services like food, housing, education, employment and transportation to people living in Hamel, Long Lake, Medicine Lake, Medina, Minnetonka Beach, Orono, Plymouth and Wayzata. May 15 marks her last day as the nonprofit’s executive director. “LaDonna has been the embodiment of all that is good in our community,” said Wayzata mayor, Ken Wilcox. “We are better people for having experienced her compassion. Her 40-year tenure of tackling difficult issues of homelessness and poverty, have made her a markable role model for us all. The entire City Council wishes her a wonderful retirement.” Even though Hoy will not be at the helm of the organization, her legacy of unselfishly helping others will live through the many human services partnerships and programs she created in the west Metro Area. More information about Hoy’s work and the IOCP can be found at www.iocp.org.

Construction Projects
Panoway on Wayzata Bay (Phase 1) – Lake Street (Broadway Ave to Ferndale Rd) This project is underway, including construction of the Dakota Rail Trail extension between Ferndale Rd and Barry Ave.
Eastbound Lake Street, from Ferndale Rd to Barry Ave, is closed to motorists to crews to construct the trail, sidewalk and curb along the south side of Lake Street. Westbound Lake Street remains open to motorists in this area. The contractor recently began installing new curbs and sidewalks in this segment of the project. Sidewalk and trail construction will continue for the next few weeks.

Lake Street between Broadway Ave and Manitoba Ave is fully closed so crews can construct the street and sidewalks and work on utilities. Lake Street between Broadway Ave and Manitoba is expected to be fully closed until the end of July. Businesses on Lake Street are accessible to pedestrians and there is ample parking available on adjacent streets and at the City’s Mill Street Parking Ramp.
In the last couple of weeks, the contractor has installed new water mains along Lake Street from Broadway Ave to Manitoba Ave, as well as new street light bases and underground wiring conduits that will provide power for the new street lights.

A Note on Public SafetyThere are many safety hazards on the Wayzata Panoway construction site. The site is surrounded by safety fences and the public is not permitted to enter the site. Perhaps the most dangerous hazard is the heavy equipment with operators having limited visibility moving on the site. Various types of heavy equipment will be on site for the entire summer. Some of this heavy equipment is being used to dig deep trenches and pits which present fall hazards for anyone wandering the site. The site will be kept as clean as possible, but nonetheless there are various trip hazards throughout the site. Many of the tools being utilized on site can launch gravel and other small particles into the air which could injure eyes and skin, which is why everyone on the site is required to wear safety glasses and hard hats. These are just a few of the major safety concerns on the site; countless other hazards exist because of the inherently unpredictable and dangerous nature of construction activities. Stay safe.

Ferndale Road Mill and OverlayThe City of Plymouth is leading a pavement mill and overlay project, which extends from Wayzata Blvd in Wayzata to Cty Rd 6 in Orono and Plymouth. The project includes repairing and improving curbs ramp, to be completed before the bituminous pavement mill and overlay. The work along Ferndale Rd is expected to be completed during the month of May. For more information, visit the project webpage. Sanitary Sewer Lining
The city is planning to perform maintenance on several sewer mains throughout the City, beginning in May. The maintenance includes the lining of the existing sewer main with a Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) liner. Sewer relining is a quick and economical process in lieu of replacing pipes by open excavation. This process prevents major traffic disruptions and health hazards from potential exposure to raw sewage. The 2020 project proposes to line approximately 8,800 feet of sewer main in the following areas: Harmony Circle, Rosswood Lane, Ridgeview Drive, Ridgeview Lane, Margaret Circle, Shadyway Rd, Barry Ave North, and Gardner Street (east of Barry Ave). Construction is expected to begin in mid-May.
Bituminous Seal Coat A map of the streets proposed to be seal coated in 2020 can be found below. Crack sealing and seal coating is planned for June and July.
