Wayzata Community Education Summer Programs Canceled

Earlier this year, the City of Wayzata and Wayzata Community Ed announced that they had formed a new partnership to offer summer programs in Wayzata parks. We have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of summer and the opportunity to share the fun and educational activities we had planned for Wayzata residents. Just as COVID-19 has changed our daily lives, it has also changed our summer plans. Wayzata Community Ed and the Wayzata Parks and Trails Board felt it was in the best interest of the community to cancel the remaining summer park programs offered by Wayzata Community Ed. As difficult as this decision was, it is important we protect the health and safety of the community.

We encourage you to get outside this summer and enjoy the parks with your family, while following safety guidelines. We look forward to seeing you in our park programs next summer, when we can launch our new partnership under better circumstances.

Wayzata Beach is Open, Lifeguards are Not on Duty

Lifeguard

The City of Wayzata has decided to leave the Wayzata Beach open to the community, this season. Unfortunately, the City had to make several difficult decisions, several months ago, and we decided lifeguards will not be stationed at the beach this season. We ask people using the beach to be safe, to stay close to inexperienced swimmers and to do their best to follow social distancing and CDC guidelines.

Community Development

  • Follow the City Council approval of a PUD amendment for the Ventana Apartments to allow construction of 25 apartment units at 253 Lake St E. City staff is preparing the development agreements for Ventana, the Melvin's 235 office building, and reviewing the preliminary concepts for a public parking facility west of Barry Ave.  Together, these projects will bring a new vitality to the 200 block of Lake St E.
  • The review schedule for several Development Applications has been affected by COVID-19. To track the anticipated review schedule for a particular project, please visit the Proposed Development Projects page of the City website at https://www.wayzata.org/286/Proposed-Development-Projects.
  • A development application has been submitted for a two-lot subdivision at 15610 Holdridge Rd East. This application proposes to create one new lot off of Holdridge Rd East. The application is scheduled to be on the June 15th Planning Commission meeting.
  • The next Planning Commission meeting will be on June 15 and will be held virtually due to COVID-19. Members of the public who wish to provide comments on any agenda items can find instructions at: www.wayzata.org/virtualpublicmeetings. More information about cancelled meetings can be found at: www.wayzata.org/coronavirus.

Construction Projects

Panoway on Wayzata Bay (Phase 1) – Lake Street (Broadway Ave to Ferndale Rd)

In the last couple of weeks, the contractor has completed the watermain installation along Lake Street from Broadway Ave to Manitoba Ave and is completing the storm sewer and street light systems. Currently, the contractor is placing concrete sidewalks along the north side of Lake Street, and is beginning construction of other features in the new Plaza Park. Sidewalk, trail, street lights, and construction of the new Plaza Park will continue in the coming weeks. Next week, it is anticipated that westbound Lake Street will reopen to one-way traffic between Broadway Ave and Walker Ave.

Eastbound Lake Street, from Ferndale Rd to Barry Ave, remains to motorists. Westbound Lake Street remains to motorists in this area. Sidewalk and trail construction will continue during the next few weeks.

Lake Street between Broadway Ave and Barry Ave will remain closed through the end of July. Businesses on Lake Street are accessible to pedestrians, and there is ample parking available on adjacent side streets and at the City’s Mill Street Parking Ramp.

A Note on Public Safety

There are many safety hazards that exist on the Wayzata Panoway construction site.  There is fencing around the construction site and the public is not permitted to enter the site. The posted detour routes for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are the safest routes around the construction zone. Walking or biking along or on the railroad corridor is prohibited and is considered to be trespassing. Please use the designated routes instead. For more information about the detour routes, including maps, please visit NavigateWayzata.com

Sanitary Sewer Lining

Crews mobilized in May to perform pipe inspections and pipe measurements for the CIPP liners in the following areas: Harmony Circle, Rosswood Ln, Ridgeview Drive, Ridgeview Ln Margaret Circle, Shadyway Rd, Barry Ave N, and Gardner St (east of Barry Ave). Crews will return in mid-June to install the liners. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
