A Farewell to Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold

After more than 31 years of commitment to keeping communities safe, Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold, will be retiring on March 31st. Chief Risvold spent the first 14 years of his career with the Minnetrista PD and Hennepin County’s Sheriff’s Department before leading Wayzata PD as Chief in 2004. In 2005, Risvold received a community leadership award from Amy Klobuchar for his work on a specific criminal investigation during his time with Hennepin County (tune in to the Mayor Minutes Podcast this month to hear the full story). In 2018, he received The Richard W. Schaller Award which is presented annually to “a chief who is respected in his community and displays exemplary service” from the Minnesota Police Chiefs Association.

Closer to home, the Chief has led his department through successfully coordinated large events, developed strong relationships all throughout the community, and has fostered a department of smart, hardworking, dedicated, and caring staff and officers. Most recently, Chief Risvold has lead the Emergency Management Team in navigating COVID-19, with a significant focus on the safety and wellbeing of the community and City Staff.

Thank you, Chief, for your steady leadership through the years. You have kept the community safe and leave the WPD well positioned for the future!

The Zoning Study Task Force Continues
to Meet Monthly

Discussion topics include updates to the City’s Design Standards as well as other sections of the Zoning Code. Public hearings for the proposed changes are expected to be scheduled with the Planning Commission and City Council in April and May.

Public Works Update

The Street Department Has Begun Pothole Patching on City Streets.

Patching in the winter and spring months is done with a material called “cold mix” which is more workable at cold winter temperatures.  Regular city pothole patching with “hot mix” asphalt begins in May when asphalt plants re-open for the season.  Hot mix asphalt is more durable than cold mix asphalt and provides a more permanent repair of potholes.

Various roads running through Wayzata are owned by the city, county or the state, and it’s important to contact the appropriate maintenance agency if you have a concern about potholes or other road conditions.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Discovered in Wayzata Trees

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) confirmed an emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation in the City of Wayzata  A local tree contractor contacted the Wayzata Parks Department and reported an ash tree with bark cracks and S-shaped galleries, tell-tale signs of possible EAB infestation. The Parks Department contacted the MDA for confirmation. Winter is the perfect time to look for signs of emerald ash borer because the trees are still bare. There are several things residents should look for when checking for emerald ash borer.

Klapprich Park and Wayzata Beach Playground Area Reconstruction

The Park and Trail Board has been working to hire a consultant to assist with designing and constructing new playground equipment at Klapprich Park (planned for 2021), and for Wayzata Beach (planned for 2022). In the coming weeks, the Park and Trail Board will be evaluating proposals and selecting a consultant. There will be opportunity for public input during the design process. The existing playground equipment does not meet current accessibility requirements, and is at the end of its useful life after 25+ years.
