Prom Safety Tips

Prom is one of the most highlighted events for high school students. Here are some tips from the Wayzata Police Department to help keep students safe during the festivities:

Buckle up

Drive Sober

Slow down and drive the speed limit

Do not text and drive

Have only one passenger in the vehicle

Keep your eyes on the road at all times

Parents, having these conversations and setting boundaries for your teens is always essential, but it is especially encouraged during this season. Help us share this awareness so that they can have a safe and memorable prom night!

National Police Week

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

To our very own Sergeant James W. Anderson and Officer William A. Mathews, we will never forget.

Zoning Text Amendments

The City has submitted an application to modify Chapters 902, 916, 917, 919, and 920 of the zoning code in order to bring them into compliance with the Comprehensive Plan, correct inconsistencies, and incorporate best practices. The City Council approved the second reading of the Ordinance at their May 2 meeting and the changes will go into effect later this month.

For more information, visit the Zoning Study webpage.

200 Lake St/TCF Building Redevelopment

Applicant Lake West Development has submitted a new application to redevelop the property at 200 Lake St, otherwise known as the former TCF building. The proposed project would include a single mixed-use building with 30 residential units, 28,240 sq. ft. of ground-floor commercial space, and underground parking. A neighborhood meeting was held by the applicant on Monday, April 24 from 5:15 to 6:15 at City Hall. The Planning Commission recommended denial of the application at their May 1 meeting. The City Council will consider the application at their June 6 meeting.

900 Wayzata Blvd/Wells Fargo Building Redevelopment Design Deviations

Applicant Mithun Enterprises has applied for deviations from the City’s Design Standards for the redevelopment project at 900 Wayzata Blvd approved in 2022. The deviations are for proposed rooftop mechanical equipment on the roofs of the previously approved bank and office buildings. The City Council approved the application at their May 16 meeting.

Solar Panels on City Buildings Conditional Use Permit

The Wayzata City Council considered a development application from the applicant, City of Wayzata, to install rooftop solar systems at Wayzata City Hall, Fire Station, and Library at 600 Rice Street East and the Municipal Bar & Grill, Wine & Spirits at 747 Mill Street East. The request was for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) at each property for rooftop solar. The Council approved the CUP for 600 Rice St E, but requested additional information on the CUP for 747 Mill St E which will go back to Council for further review at a later date.

Tree Preservation Ordinance Update

The City of Wayzata applied for Zoning Text Amendments to Chapter 936 - Tree Preservation and Chapter 918 - Fencing/Screening. In October 2022, the City adopted amendments to Chapters 519, 710, and 936 of the Zoning Ordinance to help ensure the protection, preservation, and enhancement of the City’s trees. Through the implementation and enforcement of the new amendments, staff has discovered that additional updates are needed to help with the implementation and enforcement of the Tree Preservation Ordinance, Chapter 936, as intended. The Ordinance was approved by the City Council at the May 16 meeting.
