Keep Leaves and Yard Waste Out of Storm Drains to Prevent Flooding and Pollution

Water quality can be greatly harmed when storm drains are contaminated with leaves and debris. These pollutants, sediments, nutrients, and bacteria can have harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Excess leaves and debris around storm drains can also clog and flood the drains and the surrounding area. 

This fall, be sure to sweep leaves and debris AWAY from storm drains and streets, inspect and clear storm drains periodically, and notify the City if any repair or replacement is needed.
Nettle Ensign Scale

Watch for Signs of this Newly Discovered Invasive Bug in Your Garden

Nettle Ensign Scale has likely been present at the Depot Garden for two years. The damage it was causing was thought to be related to a mealy bug infestation, but University of Minnesota entomologist Dr. Vera Krischik identified the pest as Orthezia urticae (Nettle Ensign Scales). Nettle Ensign Scale has since been identified in the perennial garden outside of the Wayzata DMV.

This pest is rarely seen in Minnesota, but is especially concerning due to its appetite for a wide range of herbaceous plants. Wayzata area gardeners should be on the lookout, as our changing climate has proven suitable for the scales’ survival.

If you suspect that your garden is hosting Nettle Ensign Scale, please contact the Wayzata Parks Department at 952-404-5366.

All events below will take place at Wayzata City Hall (600 Rice St. E) and are open to the public. Agenda packets with budget information will be available for public viewing a few days prior to the meeting on Wayzata.org.

Adoption of final tax levy, budgets, and Capital Improvement Plan.

Run in the Boo Bash Dash

Join in the Halloween fun at the annual Wayzata Boo Bash Dash, a spooktacular race in downtown Wayzata, on October 28! Run or walk a certified 10k, 5k, Competitive Lake Street Mile and fun run with friends. Costumes encouraged! 

This event will feature finish-line festivities including a pumpkin derby, costume contest, and more.

Following the Boo Bash Dash will be the annual Boo Blast Celebration which will include trick or treating around town.

Light Up the Lake Community Celebration

Light Up the Lake is back on November 24 in Wayzata! Join us on Lake Street from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. for holiday refreshments, horse-drawn wagon rides, reindeer, live music, a town lighting ceremony, with the Mayor, and of course the spectacular parade of lights with local fire departments and our Police Department. It will be a magical evening in our community and we can’t wait to see you there!

Public Works Updates

Ferndale Road Sidewalk Improvements 

New Look Contracting, Inc. continues work on the construction of a concrete sidewalk on the east side of Ferndale Road, between Wayzata Boulevard and Lake Street. Last week, the contractor completed most of the concrete sidewalks and paved the first layer of bituminous pavement on the street. They also began grading behind the new curbs to tie into the existing lawns. Next week, the contractor is scheduled to complete irrigation repairs, place seed, mulch material, and sod, and construct a short retaining wall near the south end of the project. The last layer of pavement is scheduled to be completed the week of October 30th. Inclement weather may delay these activities. Ferndale Road is currently closed to through-traffic, but it is accessible to residents.

Community Development

Wayzata Boulevard Corridor Study 

The City Council formally adopted the Wayzata Boulevard Corridor Study at their October 10 meeting. Implementation of the plan will take place over the short, medium, and long term and include actions ranging from safety improvements to zoning updates, to full reconstruction of portions of the street in the future. Thank you to the Corridor Study Committee and the entire community for your input and support during this long process!

825 Mill St E (Promenade) – Mill St Flats 

Owner Wayzata Bay Superior Retail has submitted an application to turn the former Lunds and Byerly’s space at the Promenade’s Superior Block into first-floor apartments. Requests include a Planned Unit Development Amendment and Shoreland District Conditional Use Permit. The Planning Commission will consider the application at their November 6 meeting. 

223 Gleason Road North – Addition 

The homeowners at 223 Gleason Road are proposing to add an attached garage and screened porch to their existing home. The project requires an impervious surface variance and rear yard setback variance. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the proposal at their October 2 meeting and the City Council will consider it at their November 14 meeting.  

308 Hampton St S – Addition

The homeowner at 308 Hampton St S is proposing to add an attached garage with additional living space to the rear of their home, remove their existing detached garage, and improve their existing driveway. The project requires an impervious surface variance and side yard setback variance. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the proposal at their September 18 meeting. The City Council will consider it at their October 24 meeting.
