A Memory We Won't Soon Forget

This past weekend we had the opportunity to celebrate the Lakewalk opening as a community. What a pleasure it was to see so many utilizing this new amenity.

Building on the success of the Panoway with the new Lakewalk and community docks, the City would like to gather the community's ideas regarding an outdoor walkable pedestrian space on the 600 Block of Lake Street. Take the survey here. The survey closes July 29.

Experience the New Panoway Walking Tour on the Plaza and Lakewalk

Learn about each phase of the Panoway Project! At each of the numbered locations within the story map linked below, there will be a walking tour checkpoint sign. Scan the QR code on each sign to view information and photos that highlight that location.

For the best experience, begin the tour on the Panoway Plaza and scan the Checkpoint #1 sign (located near the fence on the lake side of the plaza).

Tip: Bring headphones/AirPods! This tour is best experienced as an audio tour, so you can look up and enjoy the view while you learn.

Give Special Attention to Your Oak Trees This Year

Our community’s oak trees are stressed! After three harsh years of drought, Wayzata’s bur, white, and red oaks are struggling to fight off even minor problems. In response, the City has expanded its agreement with Rainbow Treecare to provide free evaluations and discounted treatment rates to residents.

nettle ensign scale bug on a leaf

Watch for This Invasive Bug in Your Garden

Nettle Ensign Scale has been identified in the Depot Garden and has likely been present for 2+ years. The damage it was causing was thought to be related to a mealy bug infestation, but University of Minnesota entomologist Dr. Vera Krischik identified the pest as Orthezia urticae (Nettle Ensign Scales). Nettle Ensign Scale has since been identified in the perennial garden outside of the Wayzata DMV as well.

This pest is rarely seen in Minnesota but is especially concerning due to its appetite for a wide range of herbaceous plants. Wayzata-area gardeners should be on the lookout, as our changing climate has proven suitable for the scales’ survival.

If you suspect that your garden is hosting Nettle Ensign Scale, please contact the Wayzata Parks Department at 952-404-5366.
