A Message from Mayor Mullin

Get ready, Wayzata! I'm thrilled to announce the launch of a new quarterly program, Mayor About Town, dedicated to celebrating the incredible people and places that make our community so special. Our mission is simple: "Support Local. Strengthen Wayzata." Each quarter, we'll delve into the heart of our town, highlighting local businesses, nonprofits, schools, and churches that contribute to our unique character.

For our inaugural episode, airing later this month, we're focusing on the power of local women-owned businesses. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lesa Fenwick of Candlelight Floral and Dr. Barbara Brost of Brost Clinic, both dedicated Wayzata residents. We'll also hear from Becky Pierson, President of the Wayzata West Metro Chamber of Commerce, for an important community update.

This program will be available on Wayzata Community TV and YouTube, bringing these inspiring stories directly to you. Dropping at the end of the month; join us in celebrating the spirit of Wayzata!

Online Property Valuation Notices

Property Valuation Notices were mailed by March 15 and can be accessed online at Hennepin County Property Information Search by entering your Address or Parcel ID (PID). Property owners receive the Hennepin County 2025 Notice of Valuation and Classification, which outlines property values used to determine taxes due in 2026.

Contact the Hennepin County assessor immediately after receiving your notice at 612-348-3046. They may be able to address your concerns without requiring you to attend the April 17 Board of Appeal and Equalization Meeting.

Reduce Waste with Organics Recycling

It is easy to make a difference in reducing waste and protecting the environment by signing up for organics recycling! In organics recycling, you collect food and compostable items in separate green bags (that are compostable) that you place in your trash cart. The green bags are later separated from the trash and sent to a compost site, where they are turned in a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Organics recycling is already included with your trash and recycling service. You just need to sign up to get started. If you live in a condo or apartment in town, talk to your property manager about organics recycling.

Hydrant Flushing Begins on April 14 

The Wayzata Public Works Department will be flushing water mains and fire hydrants starting Monday, April 14. This process will ensure that all fire hydrants are operating properly. If you notice discolored water in your home, run the cold-water faucets until water runs clear. Be observant while washing clothes until after the flushing period. In the event of inclement weather, the schedule may change.

Broadway Ave/Wayzata Blvd Traffic Signal to be Completed This Summer

This project has been suspended for the winter months, but construction will resume early next month.

Work completed in the fall of 2024 includes concrete curb and sidewalk improvements and installation of most of the underground components on the south ½ of the intersection. Work scheduled for spring of 2025 includes concrete curb and sidewalk improvements and installation of the remaining underground components on the north half of the intersection, as well as installation of the signal control cabinets, structural steel components, signal equipment, and electrical wiring. Once work is completed on the new signal system, the temporary wood-pole signal system will be removed, and the intersection pavement will be milled and repaved, followed by pavement striping.

There may be lane shifts and occasional delays while construction crews continue to work this spring, primarily on the north half of the intersection.

It is anticipated that the project will be completed by mid-summer of 2025. If you have questions about this project, contact the City’s Engineering Department at 952-404-5371 or at jschumann@wayzata.org.

Save the Date: Spring Clean Up on May 3

The City of Wayzata will provide a curbside pick up of household items for residential customers who pay for recycling and garbage service on their monthly utility bills. The pickup is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Items that can be taken:

  • Small carpet pieces–rolled and tied with twine and no larger than 4’ long and 12” in diameter, chairs, grills-gas tanks removed, exercise equipment, doors, windows, gutters, lawn mowers-drain gas and oil.  
  • Furniture/Mattress-Boxsprings - $69.96 each. Call Republic Services at 763-972-3335 before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 to arrange payment and Monday, May 5 pick-up.  
  • Appliances and electronics – $90.18 each. Call Republic Services at 763-972-3335 before 3:00 pm on Thursday, May 1  to arrange payment and Monday, May 5 pick-up.

Current Development Projects

Demolition - 641 Lake Street East

Applicant and property owner Marquee Place, LLC will replace part of 641 Lake St E with a new two-story commercial structure. The white portion of the building, built in 1952, previously had Caribou Coffee and Jewelweed as tenants. Demolition and building permits will be issued shortly and work will continue over the next few months.

Ferndale Bluffs Subdivision 

Owner Draycott DST has applied to subdivide the 11.87-acre parcel at 565 Ferndale Rd W into three single-family parcels. The subdivision proposal includes a public street and cul-de-sac. The proposal was previously publicly reviewed in 2023 for an Environmental Assessment Worksheet and in 2024 for a 4-lot subdivision proposal. The Planning Commission recommended approval at the February 24 meeting. The City Council tabled the item at their March 26 meeting after being unable to reach a consensus with four Councilmembers present. The item is anticipated to return to the Council on April 15, when five Councilmembers are anticipated to be present.

200 Lake St E Redevelopment

Owner Lake West has applied to redevelop the former TCF headquarters at 200 Lake St into a three-story, mixed-use development with underground parking. The project is proposed to include 50 for-sale residential units on upper levels and about 23,700 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the proposal with conditions at their March 24 meeting.

Waycliffe Fence Variance 

The Waycliffe Townhomes Association has applied to extend an existing 6’ tall, 100% opaque privacy fence across the area where Waycliffe South and Hollybrook Road meet. The fence requires a variance. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the application at their March 10 meeting, and the Council is scheduled to consider the application at their April 1 meeting.

Xcel Energy Infrastructure

Owner Xcel Energy has applied for a conditional use permit to install a 140-foot-tall communications pole at their existing substation at 701 Central Ave N. The proposed communications pole would allow Xcel’s nearby substations to communicate with one another on their own network. The Planning Commission will consider the application on April 7.
