National Police Week

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

To our very own Sergeant James W. Anderson and Officer William A. Mathews, we will never forget.

Protect Water Quality, Pick Up Pet Waste!

In urban areas, stormwater carries phosphorus and other pollutants directly into Minnesota’s water resources through the storm drainage system. Unlike our household wastewater, stormwater doesn’t go through a treatment plant first, but is dumped directly into lakes, rivers and wetlands. Fertilizers, leaves, grass clippings, eroded soil, and animal waste are all sources of phosphorus. When they are swept or washed into the nearest street or storm drain, they end up directly in Lake Minntetonka.

You can do your part to protect water quality by picking up pet waste promptly. Pet waste can contain harmful bacteria as well as nutrients. Never drop pet waste in the street or ditches. Wayzata’s parks have pet waste stations, with pet waste bags and trash cans that are maintained by the Parks Department.

More Access to Lake Minnetonka: Stepdowns on the Panoway Lakewalk

One of the most anticipated design components of the 1,200 ft long lakewalk has been the installation of the community-driven “stepdowns.” Unfortunately, due to needed design tweaks, the stepdowns were not able to be installed last year.

The two stepdowns were originally designed to give even more access to the lake. Community members will now have another place to sit and even dip their toes into Lake Minnetonka within the next week!

The City will also be installing life preservers nearby as well as signage to indicate that fishing, swimming, and docking boats is prohibited.

Watermain & Street Rehabilitation Project

The City has hired Park Construction Company to install watermain pipes in the Central Ave S/Lake St E/Hampton Ave S neighborhood. This planned improvement to the City’s water distribution system will improve water flow in the overall system and will provide new water services for most property owners in the project area. The project also includes milling and re-paving select streets this summer, following the watermain installation work. Work began last week. Pavement reclaiming on Broadway Avenue North is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 (weather permitting). Re-paving will occur during the following week.
