A Message from the Mayor: Leadership Transition at City Hall

As you're likely aware, Wayzata City Manager Jeff Dahl will be transitioning to a new role as the City Administrator for the City of Woodbury. We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Jeff for his exemplary service to the City of Wayzata. He's been an invaluable asset to our community, and we wish him all the best in his new role.

Looking ahead, the Wayzata City Council met in a workshop earlier this week and has indicated a preference for an internal candidate for the Interim City Manager position. We have also authorized staff to engage with outside advisors to assist the Council in launching a search for Wayzata's next City Manager.

Our goal is to finalize the details of this process at our July 1 City Council Meeting. We are committed to a thoughtful and transparent process that ensures continued stability and effective leadership for our city. We understand that leadership changes can bring questions, and we are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process.

20 mph

An Update on Wayzata Speed Limits

Reducing speed limits in Wayzata is a key initiative in the City's 2024-2026 Strategic Plan. The primary goal is to improve safety on the roadway by reducing the number of crashes and to make crashes less likely to be life-threatening or life-altering.

Based on guidelines from Minnesota Statutes and the Minnesota Department of Transportation, staff proposed and City Council approved a Citywide speed limit of 20 mph, unless otherwise posted, at their June 17 meeting.

Over the course of the next year and a half, staff will coordinate new and updated signage and work to update signal timings with the goal of the new speed limit being implemented in January 2027.

new dock bumpers

Dock Bumper Update

Last summer, we heard feedback that the original dock bumper design does not serve our boaters well. The City's dock working group, which includes boaters and users of Lake Minnetonka, reviewed the feedback and came up with a new design. The new vertical bumpers have been installed on select slips on a trial basis and, based on boater feedback, are performing well.

City Council has authorized the installation of the new vertical bumpers for all slips, and boaters can expect to see them in the coming weeks.

e-bike

New E-Bike Ordinance in Wayzata

The use of e-bikes as a form of transportation has increased significantly in recent years, and many now have the capability to go over 30 mph. During that time, the nation has also seen a dramatic and rapid increase of e-bikers hospitalized with head trauma. This trend is often linked to a lack of consistent safety regulations.

To address this, a new ordinance has been added to the Wayzata City Code & Charter requiring all people under the age of 18 riding e-bikes and motorized scooters to wear helmets.

The new ordinance allows the Wayzata Police Department to make more stops and better promote, educate, and enforce risky operational behaviors with people under the age of 18 and their parents.

This ordinance aligns with other Lake Minnetonka-area cities and will have a strong impact on multi-modal transportation safety habits to the surrounding areas.

In addition to this ordinance, the City has placed signage along Lake Street encouraging bikers to slow down when coming through town and to indicate that bikes of any kind are prohibited on the Lakewalk.

Register to Host a Night to Unite Block Party in August

Neighborhoods across Wayzata have been gathering to celebrate Night to Unite for more than 40 years! On August 5, in the evening, the Wayzata Police, Fire, City staff, and elected officials will visit neighborhood parties throughout Wayzata and Long Lake. Along with the police cars and fire trucks, there will be trinkets for kids and a crime prevention message at each stop. This is a great time to ask questions of elected officials, police officers, firefighters, and City staff.

Tree Preservation Ordinance Amendment

At their May 20 workshop, Council directed staff to bring forward the draft ordinance due to the significant impacts the current ordinance has on golf courses. The Planning Commission reviewed the draft ordinance and recommended an amended ordinance. On June 16 the Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider amendments to the Tree Preservation Ordinance to allow golf courses to apply for exemption from the ordinance. City Council is scheduled to review the proposed ordinance on July 1.
