A Message from the Mayor Addressing Traffic & Safety Concerns

A common concern we hear from residents is about traffic and safety on major roads like Wayzata Blvd, County Road 101 (from Bushaway to Central Ave N), and Lake Street. We're actively working to address this by engaging residents and collaborating with other jurisdictions like Hennepin County for both short-term and long-term solutions.

Recent Actions & Improvements

  • County Road 101 North / Central Ave: Following a listening session in May, new signage will be installed to prevent intersection blocking and limit visual obstruction at Hollybrook Drive. We're also deploying orange safety flags and a speed feedback trailer this summer, and Hennepin County is adjusting signal timing to improve safety and flow.

  • City-Wide Speed Reduction Plan: Reducing speed limits in Wayzata is a key initiative in the City's 2024-2026 Strategic Plan with the primary goal to improve safety on the roadway by reducing the number of crashes and to make crashes less likely to be life-threatening or life-altering. Based on guidelines from Minnesota Statutes and the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the City Council approved a Citywide speed limit of 20 mph, unless otherwise posted, at their June 17 meeting. Over the course of the next year and a half, staff will coordinate new and updated signage and work to update signal timings with the goal of the new speed limit being implemented in January 2027.

  • Wayzata Boulevard Corridor: We continue to work with Hennepin County on long-term plans for this entire corridor.

  • Increased Police Presence: Our Police Department has added three new community service officers and a new reserve officer to supplement our patrol efforts.

We're committed to ongoing improvements. As always, I welcome your direct feedback.

new dock bumpers

New Dock Bumpers to Be Installed on All Slips in the Coming Weeks

Last summer, we heard feedback that the original dock bumper design does not serve our boaters well. The City's dock working group, which includes boaters and users of Lake Minnetonka, reviewed the feedback and came up with a new design. The new vertical bumpers have been installed on select slips on a trial basis and, based on boater feedback, are performing well. City Council has authorized the installation of the new vertical bumpers for all slips, and boaters can expect to see them in the coming weeks.
e-bike

New E-Bike Ordinance in Wayzata

The use of e-bikes as a form of transportation has increased significantly in recent years, and many now have the capability to go over 30 mph. During that time, the nation has also seen a dramatic and rapid increase of e-bikers hospitalized with head trauma. This trend is often linked to a lack of consistent safety regulations.

To address this, a new ordinance has been added to the Wayzata City Code & Charter requiring all people under the age of 18 riding e-bikes and motorized scooters to wear helmets.

The new ordinance allows the Wayzata Police Department to make more stops and better promote, educate, and enforce risky operational behaviors with people under the age of 18 and their parents.

This ordinance aligns with other Lake Minnetonka-area cities and will have a strong impact on multi-modal transportation safety habits to the surrounding areas.

In addition to this ordinance, the City has placed signage along Lake Street encouraging bikers to slow down when coming through town and to indicate that bikes of any kind are prohibited on the Lakewalk.

Tree Preservation Ordinance Amendment

At their May 20 workshop, Council directed staff to bring forward the draft ordinance due to the significant impacts the current ordinance has on golf courses. The Planning Commission reviewed the draft ordinance and recommended an amended ordinance. On June 16 the Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider amendments to the Tree Preservation Ordinance to allow golf courses to apply for exemption from the ordinance. City Council is scheduled to review the proposed ordinance on July 1.
