A Message from Mayor Mullin

Earlier this week, we had a historic gathering for Wayzata with five out of seven living Mayors of the City of Wayzata around one table, representing a whopping 57 years of public service to our amazing city!

The purpose of this historic meeting was to record the next "Mayor About Town" show. Trust me, you will not want to miss this episode when it drops in August on YouTube, WCTV, Comcast, and Mediacom!

It was an honor to spend time with these great leaders, who have shaped Wayzata's priorities and traditions over half a century:

  • Wayne Fadden: Elected 1968, served 3 terms through 1974 – the only person to hold both City Manager and Mayor roles!
  • Barry Petit: Elected 1996, served 2 terms through 2004
  • Andrew Humphrey: Elected 2004, served through 2008 – part of Wayzata's only Father (Bill) & Son Mayoral team!
  • Ken Willcox: Elected 2008, served 3 terms through 2020
  • Andrew Mullin: Elected 2024

We also acknowledge former mayors Bob Gisvold and Johanna Mouton, who were unable to participate due to prior commitments. Stay tuned for the show to catch this unique glimpse into Wayzata's rich history and future!

An Update Regarding City Hall Leadership

The City Council has been working on both an interim replacement and a long-term plan to fill the City Manager position. Last week, the City Council officially approved Mike Kelly, Public Works Director/City Engineer, as interim City Manager. Mike has been with the City for more than three decades and has the leadership abilities to lead the organization during this interim period while both the City Manager seat is vacant and the Deputy City Manager is out on leave.

If you have any questions regarding the transition plan, please reach out to the City at 952-404-5300 or email city@wayzata.org.

Short-Term Rental Ordinance Update

On May 6, the City Council directed staff to begin public engagement with Short-Term Rental (STR) owners/operators and neighboring property owners. Two engagement sessions have been held, one for each group of stakeholders.

Staff is in the process of compiling the comments, letters, and survey responses from stakeholders and will present these findings to the City Council at a workshop on August 6. Staff will be seeking guidance and direction from the Council to determine the provisions of a potential ordinance amendment. All materials presented to the City Council will be available at Wayzata.org.

new dock bumpers

New Dock Bumpers to Be Installed on All Slips in the Coming Weeks

Last summer, we heard feedback that the original dock bumper design does not serve our boaters well. The City's dock working group, which includes boaters and users of Lake Minnetonka, reviewed the feedback and came up with a new design. The new vertical bumpers have been installed on select slips on a trial basis and, based on boater feedback, are performing well. City Council has authorized the installation of the new vertical bumpers for all slips, and boaters can expect to see them in the coming weeks.
